Repair and Check
The part is installed and the appliance is run through a cycle so you can watch it working.
How Smeg designs its cooktops
Smeg cooktops come in gas, induction and electric. Gas burners use thermocouples, so a burner that goes out when you release the knob usually has a worn or mispositioned thermocouple, not a gas problem. Igniters can click without lighting because of a dirty electrode or a misaligned burner cap. Induction models use power boards and a cooling fan under the glass, and zones may shut off mid-cook if the fan fails or the pan isn't suitable. Electric cooktops can lose elements or controls. We start with cleaning and positioning, then test the thermocouple, igniter or induction electronics.
Common failure points on Smeg cooktops
- Thermocouple worn, flame won't hold
- Igniter clicking without catching
- Induction zone switching off
- Cooling fan under the glass stopped
- Burner cap sitting unevenly

Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
The cooling fan may have failed, causing the electronics to overheat, or the pan may not be suitable. Check the pan with a magnet first. If it's compatible, we test the fan and board.
Usually the burner cap is misaligned or the ports or electrode are dirty. Scrub them, let everything dry, then set the cap back square. A burner that still refuses gets its spark electrode and valve tested.
