Smeg Repair for Owners, Renters and Landlords

Most people pick Smeg for the look, but the appliance behind the pastel door is a straightforward European design with its own habits. Gas burners have flame-failure thermocouples, ovens run a cooling fan after you switch them off, and many refrigerators drain their defrost water through a small hole in the back wall. We repair Smeg independently and aren't a Smeg service center. If it's still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact Smeg first. Otherwise, we diagnose it in your kitchen and quote before work.

Stacked & closet laundry
Townhouses and condos often put a stacked washer-dryer in an upstairs closet, so a small drip can end up staining the room underneath. Tell us where the machines sit.
Condo & high-rise rules
Many managed buildings ask for a certificate of insurance, a reserved freight elevator or set work hours. Check with yours and pass the rules along when you book.
Parking & access
Visitor spaces, garage clearance, gate codes and front-desk sign-in all shape a visit. Mention them at booking so nothing holds up the diagnosis.
Rentals & landlords
A tenant can book the visit. We report the fault and the price to the owner or property manager, who signs off before any work starts.
Garages, heat & humidity
A garage fridge or freezer can struggle through a hot, humid summer or a hard cold snap without any part failing. Check the temperature range in its manual.
Straight answers
When an older appliance isn't worth repairing, we say so and explain exactly which part failed.

How a Repair Visit Works

01

Tell Us What's Wrong

Name the make, add the model number if it is handy, and describe the symptom. A picture of the label inside the door lets us check parts.

02

Diagnosis at Your Home

The technician tests the appliance along with its power, water, drain, gas or vent connections until the fault is confirmed.

03

A Price Before Work

We name the failed part and give you the cost of fixing it. Work starts only after you agree.

04

Repair and Check

The part is installed and the appliance is run through a cycle so you can watch it working.

Smeg

An enamel works that became a design brand

Smeg was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, and it's still owned by the family. The name comes from Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, a reference to the company's start in enameled metalwork. It's a different company from Bertazzoni the range maker, though both come from the same town.

In the US, Smeg is best known for FAB refrigerators and its line of small appliances, but it also sells ranges, built-in ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, wine coolers and microwaves.

Small kitchens with a statement piece

Smeg appliances often end up where space is tight and style matters: a condo kitchen with a single wall of cabinets, a townhouse basement bar with a compact refrigerator, or an older house where a FAB fridge or a Portofino range became the centerpiece of a remodel. A FAB refrigerator is also a common second fridge in a family room or home office.

Compact spaces can hide ventilation problems. A FAB pushed tight against a wall or boxed in by cabinets struggles to shed heat, especially in a warm summer room.

European habits worth knowing

Every Smeg gas burner is guarded by a thermocouple, which is why the knob has to stay pressed briefly after the spark catches. Once you switch a Smeg oven off, a tangential fan keeps pushing air out above the door until the electronics and the surrounding cabinetry have cooled, so a fan that carries on for a while is normal.

Many FAB refrigerators defrost the fresh-food side by letting frost on the back wall thaw and trickle toward a small drain opening. If the hole clogs with crumbs, water collects under the crisper drawers. Models with a small internal freezer compartment need defrosting by hand from time to time.

Smeg products we see

  • Refrigerators: FAB retro refrigerators in single-door and combination versions, plus built-in models. Clogged defrost drains, ice in the freezer compartment, gaskets, thermostats and fans are common calls.
  • Dishwashers: Built-in and fully integrated dishwashers. Clogged filters, anti-flood shutdowns, inlet valves, heating faults and door hinges carrying heavy panels are the usual repairs.
  • Ovens: Wall-mounted electric ovens plus the cavities of Smeg ranges, including compact 24-inch units. Tangential cooling fans, convection motors, elements, probes and hinges come up most.
  • Microwaves: Built-in microwaves and combination microwave ovens. No heat in one mode, door switch faults and control panel problems are the typical calls.
  • Cooktops: Gas, induction and electric cooktops. Burners that go out when released, igniters, thermocouples and induction zones shutting off are the usual complaints.
  • Wine Coolers: Undercounter and built-in wine coolers. Temperature drift, fan noise, fogged glass and worn door seals are the common issues.
  • Stoves: The burner side of Smeg ranges, including Victoria and Portofino. Burners that won't stay lit, clicking igniters, clogged ports and stiff knobs are frequent complaints.
  • Ranges: Portofino, Victoria and other Smeg ranges in gas, dual-fuel and induction, 24 to 48 inches wide. Flame-failure parts, spark electrodes, bake elements, both oven fans and hinges wear out.

Parts for Smeg

Functional Smeg parts, the thermocouples, spark plugs, heating elements, fan motors and door seals, are generally stocked for North America. Anything tied to a color, such as a pastel door skin, a handle or a trim strip, often ships from Guastalla, and so do some control boards. The rating plate gives us the exact model and production code, and you hear how long the part should take before you decide.

FAQ

Common Smeg Questions

Brief answers to what customers most often ask us. Don't see yours? Ask when you call, or add it to the notes when you book online.

Still have a question?

Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.

Often, yes. Many problems are a clogged drain, a gasket, a thermostat or a fan, which are straightforward. A compressor or sealed-system problem is more costly, and we tell you if it isn't worth doing. Before quoting, we look up whether your model's parts are still in supply.

That's the cooling fan, which protects the controls and cabinetry until the oven cools down. It should stop on its own. If it never stops, or doesn't run at all, the fan or its thermostat may need service.

We order replacement trim and panels from Smeg by model and color code when they're available. Some colors are discontinued, and we'll tell you before ordering if an exact match isn't possible.
