McLean & Great Falls

Local notes before you book

McLean and Great Falls fill the northeastern corner of Fairfax County along the Virginia bank of the Potomac, across the river from Washington and Montgomery County, Maryland. Chain Bridge Road and Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) carry traffic through McLean's commercial center, the George Washington Memorial Parkway follows the river cliffs to the east, and Georgetown Pike (Route 193) curves west through wooded country toward Great Falls Village. To the southwest the Capital Beltway and the Dulles Toll Road meet at Tysons, where Silver Line trains stop at the McLean and Tysons stations among office towers and shopping centers.

None of this is an incorporated town: McLean, Great Falls and Tysons are unincorporated communities governed directly by Fairfax County and its Board of Supervisors. Close to the McLean business district stand brick ramblers and split-levels from the 1950s and 1960s, many of them now replaced lot by lot with much larger custom houses. Farther west the parcels open into estates of an acre or more, and in Tysons the newest homes are condominium and apartment towers built close to the Metro.

Communities and ZIP codes in McLean & Great Falls

Downtown McLean, Langley and parts of Chesterbrook (22101): the eastern side of McLean, from the shops along Chain Bridge Road and Old Dominion Drive out to the river palisades, the parkway and Chain Bridge into the District. The McLean Community Center, Langley and McLean high schools and the stretch of Georgetown Pike past Claude Moore Colonial Farm all fall here.

West McLean and much of Tysons (22102): residential streets off Lewinsville Road, Spring Hill Road and Swinks Mill Road reaching toward Scotts Run Nature Preserve, plus Tysons Corner Center, Tysons Galleria and the apartment and office towers around the McLean and Tysons stations. Wooded single-family lots and high-rise condominiums sit only a short drive apart within this one ZIP.

Great Falls (22066): the community west of McLean centered on Great Falls Village at Walker Road and Georgetown Pike, running north to Riverbend Park on the Potomac and south toward Leesburg Pike near Colvin Run Mill. Houses stand on large wooded parcels, many reached by long private drives, and a great many of them draw water from their own wells and send waste to septic fields.

Booking a visit: gates, long drives and condo towers

Getting to the appliance is the part of a visit here that most needs planning. Estate properties may have a keypad gate, a shared private lane or a driveway steep enough that a van parks at the bottom. Tysons buildings usually want contractors registered at the front desk, and some ask for a loading dock window or a reserved service elevator when a large part has to come up. When you book, give us the gate code or the desk's instructions, tell us which floor the machine is on, and send the model and serial number if the label is easy to reach.

From split-levels to estate kitchens: what the houses mean for repairs

A rebuilt house in McLean or a newer Great Falls home usually has a matched suite of built-ins: refrigerator and freezer columns behind custom panels, a panel-ready dishwasher, a pro-style range under a powerful hood, steam or convection wall ovens, and often a wine column. They sit in tight cutouts and depend on clear grilles at the toe kick or cabinet top to shed heat.

Laundry is often on the bedroom floor in these houses, with a drain pan under the washer and a dryer vent that travels through a ceiling or wall cavity to a roof cap or high side-wall hood. The original 1950s and 1960s houses near downtown McLean are simpler: a modest kitchen with freestanding appliances, a basement laundry with a short vent through the rim joist, and a spare refrigerator in the garage. Tysons condos use counter-depth refrigerators, electric or induction cooking and stacked washer-dryer pairs, sometimes ventless.

Wells, septic and the appliances that depend on them

In Great Falls and on some large lots in McLean, water comes from a private well rather than a public main. Well water can be hard, can carry dissolved iron, and can bring fine sediment after heavy rain or when the pump cycles hard. Small parts feel it first: the inlet valve screens on washers and dishwashers, the solenoid valve that feeds a refrigerator ice maker, and the reservoir and pump in a steam oven.

The well's pressure tank decides how hard water arrives at each appliance, and a tank that has lost its air charge makes fills uneven. When the electricity goes out, the well pump stops too, so a washer or dishwasher mid-cycle will stall until power returns. Septic systems add a different concern: a slow drain may sit in the septic line rather than in the machine, so we test the appliance's own pump and hose before pointing to anything outside it.

Fairfax Water, storms and seasons in 22101, 22102 and 22066

Fairfax Water supplies most of McLean and Tysons with treated, moderately hard water that slowly leaves scale in dishwashers, kettles and ice-maker valves. Summer thunderstorms and winter ice bring branches down on overhead lines along the wooded roads, and an outage can leave a refrigerator, freezer or oven showing an error until it is reset or its control is tested. Hard freezes threaten washer hoses and refrigerator lines that run along outside walls or through unheated garages.

FAQ

Before You Book: Common Questions

Brief answers to what customers most often ask us. Don't see yours? Ask when you call, or add it to the notes when you book online.

Still have a question?

Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.

It can. Sediment and iron from a well collect on inlet screens and in small valves, and hard water leaves scale on heating parts. We check those points early, and if the water itself seems to be the cause, we will suggest having your treatment equipment or pressure tank looked at.

Yes. Give us the building's contractor rules when you book: front-desk registration, garage entry, loading dock times and any service elevator booking.
