Sub-Zero Repair for Owners, Renters and Landlords
Plenty of Sub-Zero owners expect a factory technician at the door, so here is the plain version: we are an independent repair service, not part of Sub-Zero's factory service network and not authorized by the company. A unit still under Sub-Zero's warranty should be serviced by Sub-Zero. Past that point, these are very repairable machines. The cabinet and door hardware are made to last for decades, and the typical failure is a single component, such as a fan motor, start relay, defrost heater, water valve or control, swapped with the unit still in its opening.
How a Repair Visit Works
Tell Us What's Wrong
Name the make, add the model number if it is handy, and describe the symptom. A picture of the label inside the door lets us check parts.
Diagnosis at Your Home
The technician tests the appliance along with its power, water, drain, gas or vent connections until the fault is confirmed.
A Price Before Work
We name the failed part and give you the cost of fixing it. Work starts only after you agree.
Repair and Check
The part is installed and the appliance is run through a cycle so you can watch it working.

A refrigeration company from Madison
Westye Bakke started Sub-Zero in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1945, and the company is still privately owned. It bought Wolf in 2000 and later launched Cove dishwashers, so the parent, Sub-Zero Group, Inc., now spans cooling, cooking and cleanup. Refrigeration is still the core.
Current full-size lines are Classic, with the familiar grille and stainless or panel fronts; Designer, the fully integrated models that disappear into cabinetry; and PRO, the heavy stainless models. Many homes also still run older 600-series built-ins.
Two cooling systems in one cabinet
Most full-size Sub-Zero units use what the company calls dual refrigeration: the fresh-food side and the freezer side each have their own compressor, evaporator and fan. A warm refrigerator with a cold freezer therefore tells us which system to open, and the healthy side keeps the food in the other section safe while we work.
Classic and PRO models put the compressors and condenser up top, behind the grille. That grille faces the kitchen air, and over time a mat of dust and cooking grease builds on the condenser. Cleaning it is part of every visit, and it clears up more running-warm complaints than any single part.
Kitchens they end up in
Sub-Zero turns up where someone rebuilt the kitchen around it: a remodeled colonial in north Arlington, an addition on an older Alexandria house, a large new build in Ashburn or Reston with a panel-ready Designer column set into the cabinetry. Condo kitchens along the Metro corridors sometimes carry an integrated unit too.
Access shapes the job. A built-in weighs a lot and is set into a tight opening, so nearly all work happens from the front or through the grille. In a condo, check with building management about elevator or loading-dock reservations if a unit has to come out.
When to keep an older Sub-Zero
Because a replacement has to match an opening, panels and trim, repairing a built-in stays sensible for a long time. The honest exceptions are a refrigerant leak on an older unit and a discontinued control board on a very old series. Either way, you get the repair price and a plain description of the alternative before anything is ordered.
Sub-Zero products we see
- Refrigerators: Classic, Designer and PRO built-ins, panel-ready columns and older 600-series units. Condenser cleaning, fans, defrost parts, door closers, valves and controls.
- Freezers: Freezer columns, freezer drawers and the freezer side of combination built-ins. Defrost heaters, fans, drawer slides, start relays and ice makers.
- Ice Makers: In-freezer automatic ice makers and the UC-15I and UC-15IP undercounter clear-ice machines. Water valves, fill tubes, scale, drains and pumps, and bin sensing.
- Wine Coolers: Full-height wine columns and undercounter wine units with dual temperature zones. Toe-kick airflow, fans, zone sensors and glass door gaskets.
Parts for Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero distributes parts through its own network, and many common components reach independent shops that way. Parts for current Classic, Designer and PRO models are generally obtainable; boards and some sealed-system items for older series take longer, and a few have been discontinued. The model and serial plate is usually inside the fresh-food compartment near the top, and we order from it and confirm supply before quoting. If only an equivalent part exists, we tell you first.
Common Sub-Zero Questions
Brief answers to what customers most often ask us. Don't see yours? Ask when you call, or add it to the notes when you book online.
Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
No. We are an independent repair company and are not authorized by Sub-Zero. If your unit is under Sub-Zero's warranty, book it with Sub-Zero. Once that coverage is over, we can diagnose and repair it.
Rarely. Most work, from fan motors and relays to controls, valves and defrost parts, is reached through the top grille or from inside the box. Pulling a unit is reserved for a few jobs, like a leak behind it, and we plan that separately.
Check it a few times a year, more often in a kitchen that sees a lot of frying or has pets. On Classic and PRO models it's behind the top grille. A gray, fuzzy layer on the fins means it's time.
Often, if the sealed systems are sound. Fans, relays, thermostats, defrost parts and gaskets remain reasonable repairs. A refrigerant leak or a discontinued control is when we would lay out the alternatives.
