How Sub-Zero designs its ice makers
Sub-Zero ice comes from two very different machines. Full-size refrigerators have an automatic ice maker in the freezer, and when it stops, the fill tube is often frozen or the water valve isn't opening fully. A clogged water filter can also starve it. The UC-15I and UC-15IP are separate undercounter clear-ice machines: they freeze a batch of cubes at a time, then refill the reservoir and flush the leftover water, with its minerals, down the drain. That design depends on a working drain. The UC-15I relies on gravity, while the UC-15IP has a pump for installs without a floor drain. A slow drain or a failed pump floods the bin. Mineral scale on the evaporator slows production, and a bin sensor that misreads can stop production early.
Common failure points on Sub-Zero ice makers
- In-freezer fill tube frozen
- Water valve opening only partway
- Scale slowing UC-15I production
- UC-15IP drain pump failed
- Bin sensor ending cycles early

Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
Mineral scale on the evaporator is common, and a cleaning cycle often restores production. A partly closed water supply or a weak valve can also be the cause.
Sub-Zero offers a drain pump kit for the UC-15I, and the UC-15IP comes with one built in. We can check whether your installation needs it.
