Undercounter, Nugget and Commercial Ice Maker Repair
A stand-alone ice machine is a small freezer, a water system and a drain all in one cabinet. Scale, a clogged drain or a failed pump stop more of them than a bad compressor does. We work out which one it is at your place and quote it for your approval.

How a clear-ice machine builds a cube
Undercounter clear-ice machines from makers like Scotsman, U-Line, Perlick and Sub-Zero don't freeze water in a tray. A small pump keeps water cascading down a refrigerated plate or cell grid, and the ice forms layer by layer as it flows. Minerals and air stay in the moving water rather than being trapped, so the cubes come out hard and clear. Once a sensor sees the slab is thick enough, the machine switches to harvest: hot refrigerant gas or a small heater warms the plate just enough for the ice to drop into the bin, and the leftover water, carrying those minerals, goes down the drain.
Nugget or pellet machines work differently: a motor-driven screw called an auger rotates inside a refrigerated tube, shaving off the thin ice that forms on its inner wall and squeezing it through an extruding head into soft, chewable pellets. That design has a gearmotor, a bearing and seals that wear, and it's especially sensitive to scale.
Commercial machines from Hoshizaki, Manitowoc and Ice-O-Matic are usually modular heads sitting on a bin, with their own harvest controls and sensors. All of these need a water supply, a drain, and room to breathe. Machines that can't drain by gravity use a drain pump, which becomes one more part that can fail.

Ice machine complaints and their usual causes
Look at the ice itself, the bin and the drain. Those three tell most of the story.
- No ice, but the machine runs
- Water supply off, clogged inlet valve screen, failed water pump, heavy scale on the evaporator, bin sensor stuck reading full
- Thin, hollow or cloudy cubes
- Scale on the evaporator, low water flow, dirty condenser, low refrigerant, thickness sensor out of adjustment
- Cubes stuck together in a sheet
- Harvest cycle not releasing the ice, bad harvest valve or thermistor, scale holding the ice to the plate
- Water pooling in the bin or on the floor
- Clogged drain line, failed drain pump, cracked water distributor, supply line leak
- Ice melts in the bin faster than usual
- Worn door gasket, blocked bin drain allowing standing water, hot location, condenser clogged
- Nugget maker grinding or squeaking
- Worn auger bearing, scale buildup on the auger, gearmotor wearing out
- Bad taste or odor
- Slime in the water system, overdue filter, old ice, sediment in the supply line
Ice machine checks you can safely do
- Confirm the water supply valve is open and the filter is current. A filter past its date can slow the fill.
- Clean the condenser grille at the front bottom of an undercounter unit. These pull room air across the coil, and a matted grille cuts production quickly.
- Run the manufacturer's clean cycle with the cleaner the manual specifies. Many machines use nickel-safe cleaners, and the wrong chemical can damage the plate.
- If water is pooling in the bin, check the drain line for kinks and the drain pump reservoir (if you have one) for debris.
- Empty and sanitize the bin every so often, especially if the ice tastes stale.
Safety first: Unplug the machine and close the water supply before removing panels or moving it. Don't use a sharp tool to free stuck ice from the evaporator plate, which is easily damaged. Commercial machines should be serviced by a technician.
Book an ice machine technician when
- It runs but makes no ice after you've confirmed the water supply.
- Cubes stay thin or cloudy after a full cleaning cycle.
- Water keeps pooling in the bin or under the unit.
- The nugget maker grinds or squeals.
- A commercial machine shows a fault light or error code.
What an ice machine visit includes
Where it can, the technician watches a full freeze and harvest: how evenly water flows across the plate, how long the freeze takes, and whether the ice lets go cleanly. Water pressure, the inlet valve, the pump and the drain get checked along the way, along with the condenser, since a clogged one slows everything. On commercial heads, stored fault codes narrow it down quickly.
Scale and cleaning problems are ruled in or out before anyone suspects the refrigeration system. If a descale and sanitize is all it needs, you'll hear that. When a part has failed, you get the diagnosis and the price first, and work begins only after you approve it.
Is your ice machine worth fixing?
Built-in undercounter and commercial machines are usually worth repairing. Water pumps, inlet valves, thickness and bin sensors, drain pumps and control boards are standard parts, and a clear-ice unit fits a specific opening, often behind a matching panel. A compressor or evaporator failure is the harder call on an older machine.
Countertop nugget makers are different: they're inexpensive and not built to be opened up, so repair rarely makes sense. If the fix would cost more than the machine is worth, we'll tell you before any work.
Why call us for ice machines
Water and scale checked first

Ice Maker Repair for Owners, Renters and Landlords
Most tap water around here starts out in the Potomac River or the Occoquan Reservoir, and over time it leaves mineral scale on the freezing plate, the water pump and the inlet valve. A machine that misses its cleanings slowly makes less ice, and worse ice. Units in a basement bar or a hot garage also fight humid summer air, which makes the condenser work harder.
How an Ice Maker Repair Visit Works
Tell Us What's Wrong
Name the make, add the model number if it is handy, and describe the symptom. A picture of the label inside the door lets us check parts.
Diagnosis at Your Home
The technician tests the appliance along with its power, water, drain, gas or vent connections until the fault is confirmed.
A Price Before Work
We name the failed part and give you the cost of fixing it. Work starts only after you agree.
Repair and Check
The part is installed and the appliance is run through a cycle so you can watch it working.

Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
Scale on the evaporator plate is the usual reason, followed by weak water flow and a dirty condenser. A full clean with the cleaner your manual names often brings the cubes back. If it doesn't, the thickness sensor, water pump or refrigeration side needs testing.
Follow the manual. Many home units call for a cleaning about twice a year, and more often under heavy use or when scale builds quickly. Commercial machines usually have their own schedule, including sanitizing the bin.
Not quite. An ice maker inside a refrigerator or its freezer door is covered on the refrigerator page. This page is for stand-alone machines under the counter, on the counter or in a commercial kitchen.
Refrigerator ice and water problems →A drain pump lifts meltwater and rinse water up to a drain when the machine can't drain by gravity. Scale, slime or debris can clog its reservoir, and the pump itself wears out eventually. When it stops, water backs up into the bin or onto the floor. Cleaning the reservoir sometimes fixes it; a pump that won't run has to be replaced.
