How Manitowoc designs its ice makers
A Manitowoc cuber makes ice by circulating water over a chilled vertical evaporator until a probe senses the sheet has reached the right thickness, then warms the plate so the slab releases and breaks into cubes. Nearly every common fault touches that loop. Scale on the probe makes it trip early or never, giving thin cubes or a machine that won't harvest. A tired water pump or a clogged distribution tube starves part of the plate and the ice forms unevenly. A harvest valve that doesn't open leaves the slab stuck, and the machine eventually shuts down on a long-harvest limit. On air-cooled units a dusty condenser stretches freeze times. We clean or inspect the food zone first, then test the pump, valves, probes and bin switch.
Common failure points on Manitowoc ice makers
- Thickness probe scaled, cubes thin or hollow
- Distribution tube clogged, partial slab
- Harvest valve stuck closed
- Water pump losing flow
- Long freeze from a dirty condenser
- Bin switch reading full when empty

Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
Scale on the evaporator surface holds the ice, or the harvest valve or harvest assist isn't doing its job. A cleaning cycle sometimes frees it. If it doesn't, we test the valve and harvest components and check the probe that starts the harvest.
Uneven water flow over the evaporator is the usual reason. A clogged distribution tube, a weak pump or low water level leaves parts of the plate short. Scale on the thickness probe can also end the freeze too early. We clean the water path and test the pump and probes.
