How a Microwave Repair Visit Works
Tell Us What's Wrong
Name the make, add the model number if it is handy, and describe the symptom. A picture of the label inside the door lets us check parts.
Diagnosis at Your Home
The technician tests the appliance along with its power, water, drain, gas or vent connections until the fault is confirmed.
A Price Before Work
We name the failed part and give you the cost of fixing it. Work starts only after you agree.
Repair and Check
The part is installed and the appliance is run through a cycle so you can watch it working.
How Whirlpool designs its microwaves
Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves are among the most common in apartments and townhouses, and their failures are consistent. A unit that goes completely dead after the door is closed has usually blown its main fuse because a door switch has worn; the switch and fuse are replaced together. When the turntable spins and the light is on but food stays cold, look at the magnetron, the high-voltage diode or the capacitor. The vent fan on the bottom can grow noisy or stop, and the turntable motor can quit. Keypads wear out, especially on the most-used keys. The capacitor stores high voltage even when unplugged, so it's discharged before testing. On older units, repairing the magnetron sometimes costs close to a new microwave, and we'll say so.
Common failure points on Whirlpool microwaves
- Door switch worn, main fuse blown
- Magnetron not heating
- High-voltage diode shorted
- Vent fan motor noisy
- Keypad keys unresponsive

Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
Most likely a door switch failed and blew the main fuse. The switch and fuse are replaced together. We also check the other door switches.
Often, for switches, fuses, fans and keypads. If the magnetron has failed on an older unit, a new microwave is often the better spend, and we'll give you both options.
