Freezer drawers on ActiveSmart refrigerators and the freezers in integrated column pairs share a weakness: the evaporator fan sits close to the coil, so when defrost fails, ice grows into the blades and the drawer starts grinding or ticking. From there the freezer warms slowly and the ice maker stops. Worn drawer runners let the drawer sit a little open, which feeds moisture in and speeds the icing. Ice makers fed through a line along an exterior wall can ice up when the temperature drops hard overnight, and an inlet valve that sticks will do the same thing in any season. We melt and inspect the coil, test the defrost heater and sensor, and check that the drawer closes square.
