Repair and Check
The part is installed and the appliance is run through a cycle so you can watch it working.
How GE Appliances designs its freezers
GE sells upright freezers, which are frost-free or manual-defrost depending on the model, and chest freezers, which are nearly always manual-defrost. A chest freezer is simple: a compressor, a thermostat and walls lined with tubing. If it stops cooling, the thermostat, the start relay or the compressor is usually at fault, and a buildup of frost around the lid points to a worn seal. Frost-free uprights add an evaporator fan, a defrost heater, a defrost sensor and a control, and a failure in that circuit lets frost choke the coil. Many freezers sit in garages, where summer heat and winter cold affect how they run, so we note where it sits.
Common failure points on GE Appliances freezers
- Defrost heater failed on upright model
- Lid seal letting in humid air
- Start relay clicking without start
- Evaporator fan stopped
- Thermostat not closing

Still have a question?
Get in touch with the brand, the symptom and, if you can find it, the model number. Some things we can answer right away; others need a technician in front of the machine.
Some GE freezers are designed to handle a wider range of temperatures, while others are not. The manual or spec sheet will list the rated temperature range. A freezer outside that range may stop cooling in a cold garage or run nonstop in a hot one.
On a frost-free model, heavy frost usually means the defrost system has failed or warm air is getting in through the door seal. We check both, since replacing the heater won't help if the gasket is the real problem.
